Who we are

A meat producer built on cattle.

Joy Meats (Pvt) Ltd was incorporated in 2018 with a clear ambition: to build a lasting footprint in Zimbabwe’s meat industry across beef, pork and chicken. Between 2018 and 2023 we built strong experience in poultry. In 2024 we made a deliberate strategic decision to redirect our energy into what has become our core strength — cattle rearing.

Today, pen-fattening is the heartbeat of the business. Every animal is sourced, fed and managed with the same discipline — from breed selection through to the final days of finishing. That specialisation is what allows us to consistently produce Super Grade beef that stands apart in tenderness, taste and consistency.

From pen to plate

How Super Grade beef is made at Joy Meats.

Five controlled stages — from breed selection to refrigerated dispatch. Scroll through to follow the process.

  1. 01

    Breed selection

Young steers are selected from proven, high-yielding breeds — Simmental, Boran, Brahman, Tuli and carefully chosen cross-breeds — chosen specifically for their meat quality, growth efficiency and marbling characteristics.

  2. 02

    Pen fattening

Selected animals enter our feeding pens at Unifresh Abattoir in Ruwa. Nutrition is controlled from day one — the same discipline, the same programme, for every animal.

  3. 03

    90-day finishing

Only young steers are finished, and only for up to 90 days under controlled conditions. This disciplined finishing period is what sets our beef apart — producing meat that is exceptionally tender, full of flavour and consistent in grade.

  4. 04

    Slaughter & grading

At Unifresh Abattoir, every carcass is inspected by Government Veterinary Inspectors, graded by Government Meat Graders, and roller-marked to certify its grade. Slaughter sheets and invoices accompany every carcass.

  5. 05

    Cold chain & dispatch

Graded meat is held in Unifresh Abattoir’s highly efficient cold rooms and dispatched only once an order is confirmed. Refrigerated delivery in and around Harare is available on request.

Common questions

What buyers ask us most.

What is Super Grade beef?

Super Grade beef is beef that has been graded by Government Meat Graders against strict national standards. Every carcass is inspected at the point of slaughter by Government Veterinary Inspectors, graded by Government Meat Graders, and roller-marked to certify its grade. At Joy Meats, only young steers from proven beef breeds go through our 90-Day Super Beef Programme — that is what produces the tenderness, flavour and consistency our clients rely on.

What is the minimum order for dressed beef?

The minimum order is one carcass at a time, weighing between 200kg and 350kg. This makes Joy Meats a suitable supplier for butcheries, supermarkets, caterers, corporate canteens and larger private events.

How is pricing set?

Indicative pricing for dressed beef is currently $5.50 per kg (as at September 2026). Pricing is reviewed roughly three times a year, driven by factors such as the availability of steers ready for feeding, peak holiday demand and broader market conditions. We encourage prospective clients to confirm current pricing and terms directly at the time of order.

Do you supply live cattle?

Yes. We supply live, pen-fattened Super Grade steers to clients who require live cattle rather than dressed carcasses. Weights, terms and pricing for live cattle are confirmed directly with the client at the time of order.

Where is Joy Meats based?

We operate from two sites in Zimbabwe: Site 1 at Unifresh Abattoir, Lot 14, Twentydales Estate, Ruwa — our feeding and finishing base — and Site 2 at Stand 3746, Haydon Park, Mt. Hampden.

Do you deliver?

Yes. For clients who require delivery, we use a refrigerated truck to deliver in and around Harare.

How is quality controlled?

Government Veterinary Inspectors inspect all meat at the point of slaughter at Unifresh Abattoir to rule out disease. Government Meat Graders then inspect and grade every carcass against strict government standards, and roller marks are imprinted on every carcass to certify its grade. Unifresh Abattoir issues invoices and slaughter sheets reflecting the appropriate grade for every carcass. All meat is handled by staff who undergo rigorous hygiene inspection and are issued relevant health certificates every six months.

Do you supply to individuals as well as businesses?

Yes. Our clients include corporates, butcheries, supermarkets, individuals hosting parties, funerals or weddings, and catering concerns.

Can you supply both Super Grade and commercial-grade beef?

Experience has shown that most clients need both Super Grade and commercial-grade beef. Our short-term response is to buy lower-grade cattle, feed them, and bring them up to commercial grade — widening our offering without diluting our Super Grade standard.

Economy, Manufacturing, Commercial, Choice, Super — the labels on a carcass are not marketing. They reflect an inspection and grading process that happens at the abattoir, before the meat ever reaches a butchery counter. Here is what each grade on the ladder actually means.
